China‘s Steel Structure Output Hit 109M Tons in 2024 But Growth Is Slowing
2026-06-04
If you’ve been watching China‘s steel structure industry over the past decade, the numbers are impressive. Output went from 51 million tons in 2015 to 109 million tons in 2024 — that’s up 113.7%. It‘s been above 100 million tons for three years straight. But here’s the thing: 2024 was the first time output actually dipped. The fast growth phase for mainstreamsteel structure production might be over.
What’s driving the slowdown? The bigger construction market isn‘t in great shape. In 2025, China’s total construction output was about 30.38 trillion yuan, down 5.43% year over year. New contracts, construction area, completed area — all dropping since 2021. That hits orders for all sorts of industrial steel structure products hard. Less new projects, slower payments from clients, tighter cash flow — smaller local steel structure builder workshops are feeling the squeeze more than anyone else.
Who uses most of the steel? About 60–70% of it goes into plates (medium and heavy plates). The rest is sections (H-beams mostly) at 15–20%, and steel tubes at about 10%. All these raw materials make up core structural steel and finished steel structure components for on-site assembly. And people are using more high-strength steel now — Q355B and Q420 are becoming standard, not just nice-to-have.
What’s keeping the business afloat? Industrial buildings, large-scale steel structure warehouse builds, and — interestingly — overseas work. Many overseas clients prefer cost-effective prefabricated steel structure solutions to shorten construction cycles. Exports have become a real bright spot. Chinese steel structure companies are landing big contracts in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and along the Belt and Road routes. We‘ll talk more about that in the next article.
Where’s the potential? Look at residential buildings. Steel structure penetration in housing is only about 1% in China. In Japan, it‘s around 36%. Even if we catch up a little, that’s a huge market. The government knows this. The China Iron and Steel Association said at their April 2026 conference: promoting Steel Structures in construction is now the main way to grow steel demand.
One stat that stands out: Steel structure workers produce about 150 tons per person per year now, up from 80 tons back in 2016. That‘s real efficiency improvement. But it’s still only about 1/7 to 1/4 of what steelmaking workers produce. Too many small, inefficient shops out there with outdated processing equipment.
For 2026, the industry isn‘t crashing — it’s just slowing down and getting pickier. The weak players will struggle. The ones with good fabrication tech, overseas reach, and residential building experience? They‘ll do just fine.
