How to Properly Store and Handle Galvanized Steel Pipes on Site

2026-01-29
Galvanized pipes can take a beating, but the zinc coating needs protection. Drag them across concrete and you'll scrape off the rustproof layer fast. Always use slings or a forklift to move them—no dropping, no rough sliding.
📦
Stack pipes on wood blocks, well off the ground. Place spacers every meter so pipes don't touch each other. This keeps moisture from getting trapped and stops pipes from bending.
Cover stacks with a tarp if they're left for days. Pooling water causes white rust, that powdery stuff I've seen ruin uncovered piles in just a month. For long stays, stand pipes upright in racks so water drains off easily.
🧹
Rinse off dirt before you use a pipe. Mud hides scratches you need to see. Don't mix different sizes in one stack. It causes mix-ups, drops, and dents that break the zinc coat.
🛡
Keep pipes away from wet concrete, cement dust and harsh chemicals. They eat away at zinc. If splashed, clean immediately with water. Never let concrete dry hard on the surface—it will damage the coating over time.
Care for them this way, and your galvanized steel pipes stay strong, rust-free, and last for years on the job.
